Not sure but don't think the AR-15 come in .243 cal. Most are 5.56 and not enough power for deer past about 150yd's but thanks for the post.

PDR, the 5.56 or .223 has more than enough power to kill a deer out to 500 yards. Of course you may think a human is easier to kill than a deer, but I assure both will die when hit with this round. BTDT.

I must admit I have never shot at a deer with a .223 nor a 5.56, however about 40 years ago I found the 5.56 to be a real failure as a one shot stopper on those other targets you speak of. I have killed many ranch steers with the .22LR but would not consider it to be a round to take hunting for the same weight target. What powder and bullet weight are you utilizing to cleanly take deer at 500yd's? I have first hand use of the .243 to 417 yd's so am very interested in any first hand use you may have of a hunting bullet of .223 out to 500 yd's. I am looking for an AR system for coyotes and deer to about that same range and if the .223 will cleanly do it I may have to revise my search. Any information you can provide will be appreciated.

Just for the record, the .223 is NOT a legal deer caliber in Kansas.

You are right and I feel for good reason, I grew up in Hutchinson. .24 cal. is minimal for Kan. and there are alot of good .24 cal. cartridges out there, .243 Win. being one of my favorites.

Ahhhhh, I love my 6mm, it is a kick ass accurate round, have one in a light barrel 788 I use as a "truck" gun and another model 700 heavy barrel VLS I use for antelope hunting. With a 95 grain barnes bullet I think you could use them on just about anything up to elk.

PDR, I would not use it to purposly hunt and shoot at an animal at 500 yards, what you said in the above message was it did not have the power, my point was it does have the power. I also understand about the aforementioned little people, that's why I carried an M-14A2, 7.62 which is my all time favorite. I would think anything in the 6mm class would be great for deer and coyote.

TT6,

I have a "converted" M1 Garand in 7.62. I has a Wilson Combat barrel which has been free-floated and a Boyt laminated stock.

It shoots "minute-of-angle" accuracy with open sights. Not bad for a 60 year old weapon.

I love the 7.62 a.k.a. .308 Winchester round.

I carry an Springfield Armory brand M14 with me on duty.....I defintiely get some looks when a major incident occurs and everyone else gets out their baby, shrunk down M4's and I got the big dawg.

I really love those "big dawg's" the old M-14 and to a lesser degree the old M-1's. Many years ago about 1975 or so, I was in a long line of traffic on a Reno County Kansas highway. County and Highway Patrol were looking for someone no doubt but when my car got to about the third one from the check point I noticed that propped on the hood of the Highway Patrol car was an old BAR and I was looking right down the muzzle. A most intimidating weapon!

TT6
You are correct and I should not have stated it like I knew first hand the .223/5.56 didn't "have enough power" to kill a deer at 500td's. I think we all agree the "enough power" is such a relative term that it means little without some qualifications. My thoughts for the .223/5.56 were for a deer hunting carry weapon and based on experience some 40+ years old, not very good footing to make such flat out statements, so I stand corrected.
However, it is my thinking the .223/5.56 lacks sufficient bullet weight and cal. for me to be comfortable hunting deer with it.

Skeeter JR.
Can you put me in touch with your bud with the AR for sale?????
