Varmint hunting originated (more or less) with guys who hunted ground hogs in the east and prairie dogs and other rodents in the west. We don't have much of either here, but for the past couple of years there has been a fat, sassy ground hog living in the rocks in a walnut grove behind the house. Every day he waddles across the back of my yard enroute to the neighbor's alfalfa field. As a result of this endless food supply he had gotten to be a real big example of the species. He won't get any bigger. Yesterday he was out by the back fence and wasn't paying attention when I put the little Savage .223 on its bipod and set it up on the hood of the Explorer. The shot was about 120 yards, and by the time I got the rifle out and set up, the whistlepig had gone back horizontal, but he stayed in the mowed grass. This morning the buzzards were feasting well on sun baked groundhog.

A man has got to know his limitations.
