Problems In the Big 12???? (1 reply)

ESPN was carrying a news item on the crawler yesterday that Texas and Nebraska had until this Friday to decide if they want to remain in the Big 12.
They have apparently been approached by the Big Ten to move there. A following item on the crawler noted that a large number of other schools, primarily in the Big 12 south, have been extended invitations to join other conferences. Admittedly I don't follow Big 12 conference business, but if these schools jump ship, the Big 12 is history. Can somebody fill me in?
CW

Congratulations to Sirmanski (13 replies)

Seems like Eyeohway stole another victory from Penn State yesterday. I was hoping that would happen with UI as the underdog.
I got a nice surprise when the new top ten came out today....Florida, Texas and Alabama still sitting atop the polls, but LSU has moved on up to #4. That's nice, but I don't think it's gonna last.....Oh...congratulations to LCX110 as well. His favorite coach at Ole Miss let an easy one slip through his fingers. I watched the game, and it seemed to me that Hooten Nutt got out-coached and his team got out-played by South Carolina. The roving cameras did not show any walleye style boats in the parking lot, so the fish must not have been biting. Didn't see any boats on the trip down to Fayetteville yesterday, but I did see many thousands of motorcycles from Monett on down to Fayetteville. Got wet between Bolivar and the north side of Springfield, but after that the weather cleared out and it was a beautiful day. Rode 321 miles round trip to get a bbq sandwich and a cold Bud Lite. Going back next year. On the way down, we did skirt by the north shore of Beaver Lake, so now I know how to get there.
CW

Huge Win for Iowa in Opener..................... (no replies)

WOW! The first weekend of 2009 NCAA football is now history and Iowa really put a thrashing on that small national powerhouse team from Northern Iowa. ESPN could not keep from commenting on the play of the Iowa team and how they managed to save the victory with two blocked field goals in the final seconds. The Iowa fans must be reall encouraged at the prospects for the rest of the season when Iowa plays lesser teams like Michigan and Ohio State....
Meanwhile, over in Oklahoma, the Sooners not only lost to BYU, but Sam Bradford is out for an indeterminate time due to an injury to his throwing shoulder. If he has not healed by the Texas game, Coach Stoopes is gonna be watching tv when the BCS Championship game is being played in January.
LSU traveled some 2900 miles out to Washington to play the Huskies. I stayed up until 1 am watching the game. As expected, the LSU linebacker corps still has work to do, but they took care of business and won by 8. Washington scored with less than a minute to go when LSU put a lot of subs in to get them some game time.
Last night was the best game of the weekend.....Fla State vs Miami. I don't like either team, but I was sorta pulling for the Seminoles and Bobby Bowden. The game was back and forth for 60 minutes. FSU had the ball on the Miami 2 yard line with a 1st down and goal to go but could not get the job done. Miami won the game when the FSU receiver dropped a pass in the end zone with no time on the clock. Looks like the FSU linebackers need a few extra workouts and perhaps lighter shoes to increase their speed. They let their team down with ineffective coverage and a noticeable lack of speed.
Well, maybe those folks in Iowa have finished the endless celebration of their great victory....time to get ready to play with the big boys......
CW

Last night the highly overrated #1 USC Trojans were beaten 27-21 by Oregon St. That ends their quest for a national championship.
Which Big Ten team will be the next to fall? Dare I speak the words.....Ohio State?
Seems like this is a replay of the BCS ratings game from last year, and the year before that, and the year before that.....yaddah, yaddah, yaddah. Oregon State was a 27 point underdog, yet they came out and beat the unbeatable Trojans. Kudos for them.
That puts LSU right where they need to be at this point in the season. They go up against Miss. St. tomorrow night. Should be a good game. Miss St is much improved and Coach Coombs will have his team ready to play. That won't be enough, though. Unless LSU rolls over and plays dead I think they will come away with a win. That's why the game is played on the field and not on the pages of the west coast newspapers.
CW

Number 5 is Florida, also from the SEC East. #6 is LSU from the SEC West. That's almost a third of the top ten. Eventually something will have to give when the Gators and Dawgs meet, but for now the SEC is once again ruling the roost. I looked at all the voting, and the computer must have dropped the voting for the Razorbacks. Not even one vote to put them in the top 25. Must be some kind of math error......Ole Miss was in there somewhere, but they go to Baton Rouge this year, and their new coach will get the full dose of what it means to play in Death Valley wearing red and blue. Bama should have a modestly successful year if Saban can round up enough bail money to get eleven players out of jail and onto the field. There are reports that Bama has a new Honor System...."Yes, your Honor, No, your Honor." Just having a huddle between plays will be difficult because players out on bail are prohibited from having contact with other felons........
CW

I must have been watching a replay of a game from several years back.....LSU was getting beat up bad by UC Irvine. In reality, LSU beat UC Irvine twice over the weekend to earn a berth at the CWS in Omaha. LSU made a dramatic 9th inning comeback to win the first game Saturday , then on Sunday went on a rampage in the final game in Alex Box stadium with back-to-back-to-back home runs in the first inning enroute to a 21-7 pasting of the Anteaters from UCI. With those two wins, LSU is 25-1 in their last 26 games, which makes them one of the hottest teams coming to Omaha. Should be a very good CWS. Maybe McMatt will go over and yell for the Tigers for me!
CW

LSU's Projected Starting QB kicked off team (3 replies)

Les Miles has booted sophomore QB Ryan Perilloux (perry-lou) off the team for continued disciplinary infractions. Perriloux was the backup this past year to Matt Flynn, but had scholastic and personal disciplinary problems most of the season. Perilloux was one of the most sought after high school QBs two years ago. Apparently the freedom of college did not agree with him. If he finishes this semester at LSU (which he is expected to do), he can transfer to a Division 1-A school and play next season. He can't transfer to another Division1 school without sitting out next season. LSU has two more experienced QBs, one a red shirt freshman and the other a transfer from Harvard. I reckon Les will get the most out of whichever one of them wins the starting job.
CW

(no replies)

The Monroe (LA) News Star reported yesterday that legendary women's basketball coach Leon Barmore who retired from La Tech after 20 seasons has gotten back in the game as an assistant coach with his former Assistant Head Coach Kim Mulkey of Baylor.
Leon had been offered numerous opportunities to become the head coach at much larger schools, but he said he did not want to take on all that goes with being a head coach again. Kim Mulkey is one of the best and brightest of the young head coaches, and she took the Baylor job when Leon retired and the dumbass AD at Tech, a local redneck named Jim Oakes, would not offer her a decent contract. He tried to lowball her, would not give her four years after she had been coaching there as Barmore's assistant for many years after she was an All American at Tech. She took the job at Baylor, which was vacated by the first ever woman's coach at La Tech. With Barmore's unmatched ability to get the most out of his players and Kim's fiery, hard driving coaching style, I think
Baylor is going to be a team that will compete for the national championship every year. Watch out UConn and Tenn.
CW

Az ranked #11, Texas #19. In the pregame show Ol' Herbie once again enlightend us with his complete grasp of the game as it is played on paper, and gave a pretty convincing argument why Arizona was going to have a light scrimmage while romping all over the field against Texas.
After his analysis was complete, I was pretty sure Texas would win, but even I was surprised at how thorougly the Longhorns completely, 100% dominated every phase of the game. No matter how well or how badly they executed, everything worked. They even gave up a touchdown on the Bonehead Play of the Year when Mac Brown's stepson inadvertently stepped out on the field and touched a fumbled ball.....but UT came right back and scored again to negate that TD by Arizona St. Herbie the Fortune Teller wasn't close in any department of his pre-game analysis.
New Husker Coach (2 replies)

Lincoln – University of Nebraska Interim Athletic Director Tom Osborne Sunday named Bo Pelini the school's 28th head football coach – and only the fifth head coach since 1962.

Osborne said his eight-day search for a successor to Bill Callahan was based on analyzing the qualities of individual coaches and balancing them with the needs of the program.

“We need a head coach with strong defensive credentials and great leadership,” Osborne said. “We were also looking for someone who can inspire confidence and get players to play with great effort. And, of course, we also wanted our new head coach to understand our traditions, including the importance of our walk-on program and the importance of football in this state.”

Osborne said Pelini “fit the bill in all respects.”

According to Osborne, Pelini “made a significant difference when he was defensive coordinator of our (10-3) team in 2003, especially after we struggled considerably on defense the year before. I was particularly impressed with the way we beat Michigan State (17-3) in the Alamo Bowl. As interim head coach, Bo motivated the team on both sides of the ball, and we played with a great deal of passion and intensity in that game – both on defense and on offense.”

In 2004, Pelini was co-defensive coordinator for an Oklahoma team that won the Big 12 championship and lost to USC in the national championship game. The last three seasons, he has been defensive coordinator at LSU, helping the Tigers to three consecutive years of a top-three national ranking in total defense.

“It takes good coaching and good leadership to have a defense ranked either at or near the top of the national charts,” Osborne said. “Last night, I thought LSU's defense played well and was important in that Southeastern Conference championship game.”

Osborne acknowledged an aggressive timeframe for hiring a new coach. “We wanted to get this done as quickly as possible, so Bo can put together his new staff and concentrate on recruiting,” he said. “These next two weeks are really critical to the recruiting process.”

Well I'll be hornswaggled.......................... (no replies)

LSU has moved back to 2nd place in the Coaches Poll. If that holds for the other poll, and all the prognosticators say it should, LSU and Ohio State will meet for the crystal football in New Orleans.
I saw the numbers on CNN, so maybe that is the final standings. OSU was first, LSU was second, and the rest of the field was quite a few points back. Lots of comments about how this team or that team should or should not be in the championship game, but in the end, most everybody agreed that it should be OSU and LSU. Guess we will now have a month of micro examination of both teams, but the game is still played between the stripes. No doubt OSU has a very good football team or they would not be where they are at No. 1 right now, but when the Tigers are healed up and can go at or near 100%, I think they will give Jim Tressel's team all they want. Geaux Tigers.
CW
