Classic varmint (no replies)

Varmint hunting originated (more or less) with guys who hunted ground hogs in the east and prairie dogs and other rodents in the west. We don't have much of either here, but for the past couple of years there has been a fat, sassy ground hog living in the rocks in a walnut grove behind the house. Every day he waddles across the back of my yard enroute to the neighbor's alfalfa field. As a result of this endless food supply he had gotten to be a real big example of the species. He won't get any bigger. Yesterday he was out by the back fence and wasn't paying attention when I put the little Savage .223 on its bipod and set it up on the hood of the Explorer. The shot was about 120 yards, and by the time I got the rifle out and set up, the whistlepig had gone back horizontal, but he stayed in the mowed grass. This morning the buzzards were feasting well on sun baked groundhog.
CW

Tresspass Fee (1 reply)

One of the things us country bumpkins have to put up with is strangers releasing packs of dogs to chase coyotes across our land.....which they don't pay any taxes on, don't do any upkeep, and of course, never ask if there's anything they can do to help from time to time. That's OK.....I have figured out a "tresspass fee" that probably pisses them off, but it works for me, I have a great time at their expense, and it sorta makes up for the loss of good calling after the couple of dozen dogs have chased the local coyotes all over east Polk County: when the dogs show up and start baying behind the house, I suit up in regular camo, or in the case of this morning in the middle of a snow storm, I cover up with Mil Spec white snow camo with a few black splotches on it....very effective for this kind of weather. I got my old faithful .243 Ruger #1 off the rack , tracked down a camo foam cushion, and headed back. Within 15 minutes the pack was running along my south fence row, coming from the west. Before I realized it, a coyote materialized running at full speed into the woods on my hilltop. I got off a quick shot, but only scared him. Apparently he got up to the ridgeline and turned west again with the pack in hot pursuit. I figured the fun was over for the day and headed back toward the house, but before I could got to the top of the hill the pack turned and was headed back my way.
I set up under a big sycamore tree overlooking the entire south fenceline. I watched a couple of deer come bounding out of the woods on my neighbor's pasture, then a coyote came slipping along the fence row about 275 to 300 yards out. I found it in the crosshairs and knocked it down with the first shot. The coyote's head was still up, so I reloaded and hit it again, but apparently not a killing shot. It staggered up and half crawled back into the wood lot from where it had come. By the time I walked down to the pond, the pack had arrived , found the blood trail, and was chewing on the coyote pretty good. I let them go at it for a couple of minutes, then noticed the 'yote was still (barely) alive. I chased the dogs off and put a round through its head to bring the chase to a conclusion. Now that might have deprived the pack of a lot of chasing, but I figure it's a fair exchange that they run the coyote to me, I shoot it, and they get to gnaw on the carcass. With the snow continuing, I reckon the coyote boys will be back tomorrow morning, and I'll be out to collect the trespass fee again....

The wind was really howling out of the west and ambient air temp was in the low twenties, so it was kinda brutal but I managed to get back to the fence row where big round hay bales are stored. Once I got hunkered down in those the wind was no longer a factor. From the bales I could watch both pastures, but after two hours I packed it in. The dogs were somewhere else and nothing was moving. Coyotes are breeding now, and it's kinda hard to pull a male away from his girlfriends......
CW

They are kinda cute, affectionate, like to have their heads scratched , and above all, I can see potential for live coyote decoys, especially where the little goat is concerned. It will bawl it's head off if momma is more than 20 feet away, so I reckon I could put it in a box and stake it out in the middle of the recently hayed field and have a real live distress call to bring in the coyotes on the run.
They do the work, I do the shooting........ (6 replies)

A group of coyote hunters who chase the quarry with hounds has been letting the pack loose out here over the last month or so. Two weeks ago I walked out back with my AR-15 and managed to get off two quick shots at a fleeing coyote. This morning I went back on my 4 wheeler and was sitting at a gate when the hounds started baying on top of my hill only a couple hundred yards from me. I had the rifle ready but when the dogs came down the back side toward me I could not see them. They did flush a coyote out, but the mix of dogs and coyote made it too dangerous to shoot and the songdog made its getaway over the next farm to the south. This is a pretty cool way to hunt......I don't have to call, I don't have to make sets, I don't really have to do any work. Eventually the dogs will push the coyotes to our place with the open pastures and I will (hopefully) see the critter in time to get a shot off.
I had the little Savage .223 bolt gun today, but next time out I may set up where I can see more area, but have longer shots. Then the .243 or even the 7mm mag might get a workout.
CW

Electronic predator call (no replies)

As you guys know, I love coyote calling gadgets. I started with a heavy Johnny Stewart JS 512 cassette tape player, learned to make my own mouth calls, then saw the light when the digital callers came out. Unfortunately "seeing the light" can be quite expensive...over five hundred bucks for a top of the line caller with remote control, so I never used one. Couple of weeks ago I was in north Louisiana to pay final respects to a friend of mine who had passed away. I found myself in the Ruston SuperCenter where they had a really cute little handheld caller that was less than thirty bucks, had six predator calling sounds on the card, and the sound card is easily interchangeable with several other types of calling cards the company makes, and the sound cards are only fifteen bucks each. I got it figuring it would be too low on volume to be really useful, but for thirty bucks you can't go too far wrong. Turns out I was correct about the volume, but the unit comes with a mini jack to hook it up to an external (optional) speaker. As luck would have it, that jack also fits the patch cord that goes with a tiny little mini-amplifier that powers the speaker from another digital caller. I kinda jury rigged it all up and the sound is almost perfect. Once the song dogs start coming out early and late, we have lots of overdue business to discuss and this little caller is going to be the go-to sound source. If that don't work, I can unplug the caller from the amp and replace it with a portable CD player or a tiny little MP3 player with a couple of tracks on it. The speaker, amp, wiring, and extra batteries, along with the additional sound sources weighs less than a couple of pounds, fits in a small zipper type cooler, and deploys quickly. This is a good way to beat the high cost of the digital callers.
CW

How long will you guys hunt coyotes after turkey season? (2 replies)

There is the never ending debate about the ethics of hunting coyotes in the summer after the pups are in the den, so I will put the rifles away by the end of May and let them have the summer to raise the young. Not only does this make me feel better, but it also makes for more "targets" this fall when the young and inexperienced adolescent coyotes can be brought to the call much more readily than the older and call wise adults. This is purely personal preference with me, and I don't intend to pass judgement on anybody who hunts through the summer. I especially don't have a problem with anybody who hunts the songdogs to put beans on the table and shoes on the kids' feet. There's more than enough coyotes to go around, and ya gotta do what ya gotta do. Good shooting to all.
CW

The season ain't closed yet........ (5 replies)

This ballsy she dog was right out behind the house this morning, and unfortunately for the coyote, I saw her before she saw me. I went back to the house, got my .223 Savage from the workbench in the garage and went back out to a large cedar tree that shielded the view out into the pasture. The coyote had moved 50 yards or so to the edge of the pasture and was looking back from under a cedar tree on the fenceline. The scope was set on the lowest (6X) setting and the AO was set at 100 yds....close enough for that kind of work. I took the offhand shot and the coyote dropped in her tracks. By the time I walked out to where she was it was all over. I just keep liking that Savage .223 with the AccuTrigger more and more. My days with heavy barrel full blown varmint rifles is about over, and the little beast is much easier to carry and shoot anyway.
CW

Hey, Hill Billy........... (1 reply)

I'm hitting the road early tomorrow morning to spend some time with the daughter and her family. I'm taking along the little AR-15 on the outside chance we get to do some songdog calling, but probably just do a little tactical work on the police range. I have a book on the way detailing how to turn those semi-autos into real shooters, so if it can be done and leave me all my arms and legs, might look at getting some short 10 round magazines for hunting. The 30 round banana clips are way too long and get in the way for precision work. Of course if you miss the first shot, you can spit out the next 29 pretty quick to catch up. Fun gun, reasonably accurate out of the box, and ammo is dirt cheap.
You guys have yourselves a great holiday season. It's gonna be warm around here, but we're headed into some snow. Hope it's not too heavy.
CW
